Renting and setting up a Valheim server

Why a dedicated server?

Valheim does offer in-game hosting, but a dedicated server has advantages:

  • 24/7 online – Friends can play at any time
  • More players – Up to 10 instead of just 4
  • Better performance – No host lag
  • Backups – Automatic world backup

Ordering a server

  1. Go to game-serverhosting.de/gameserver/valheim
  2. Choose at least 4 GB RAM
  3. Order and wait for setup

Joining the server

Via Steam

  1. Open Steam → View → Servers
  2. Favourites → Add server
  3. Enter your server IP and port

In game

  1. Start Valheim → "Join Game"
  2. "Community Server" → Enter IP
  3. Enter the server password

Configuring settings

The most important settings in the start line:

-name "My Valheim Server"
-world "MyWorld"
-password "secret"
-port 2456
-public 1

Enabling crossplay

Since the crossplay update, PC and Xbox can play together:

-crossplay

Performance tips

  • Fewer bases: Many large bases cause lag
  • Tidy up: Destroy items that are not needed
  • Render distance: Cannot be changed server-side, but fewer buildings help
  • Regular restarts: Daily restart via the scheduler recommended
