Which Minecraft version for your server?
This overview captures what server operators need to know about Minecraft versions — kept up to date. Unlike a changelog, it answers the one question that matters when hosting: what does a version mean for running your server?
Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition
- Java Edition: the PC variant. Plugins (Paper/Spigot), most mods and server tooling target this.
- Bedrock Edition: consoles, mobile, Windows app. Different engine, different server software.
- Crossplay: With Geyser + Floodgate, Bedrock players join a Java server. At game-serverhosting.de this is set up automatically on every Minecraft server.
Server software & compatibility
| Software | Purpose | Version lag |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | unmodified Mojang server | available at release |
| Paper | performance + plugins (recommended) | usually a few days after release |
| Spigot | plugin base (older) | after Paper |
| Geyser | Bedrock players on a Java server | follows Paper |
Note: right after a Minecraft release there is often briefly no matching Paper/Geyser build. For plugin servers it pays to wait a few days until the server software catches up.
Switch version at game-serverhosting.de
No FTP client, no reinstall required:
- Open the server panel → Settings / Version tab
- Pick the version (or Paper build)
- Restart the server — the new version loads on boot
Your world and configuration are preserved. A backup before major version jumps is still recommended (Backups tab → one click).
New versions & updates
Whenever a relevant new Minecraft version or major server-software update lands, a dedicated article appears in our News — covering what changes for operators. This overview links them.
